This review covers the relaxed performance of The Further Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan, shared by an audience member who attended the 6:30pm show on Tuesday 9th December at Billingham Forum Theatre. Their experience highlights the care, creativity, and inclusivity that went into making this performance accessible for all.
Before the show began, Associate Producer, Writer and Director Liam Mellor introduced the relaxed performance, explaining the adjustments in place. House lights remained at 20% brightness, sound levels were reduced, and audience members were reassured that Connor McIntyre, who plays Captain Hook, is “actually lovely” despite his villainous role. This thoughtful introduction set a calm and friendly atmosphere right from the start.
The production featured a fantastic eight‑person ensemble, full of energy, expression, and enthusiasm. Their choreography spanned a wide range of styles and was performed with precision and flair. The Native Islanders’ scenes were led by Tigerlily (Charlotte Flower), whose powerful vocals particularly shone during “Waving Through a Window”.
Michelle Heaton brought a gentle charm to the role of Tinker Bell, with warm vocals and a joyful stage presence.
Mrs Hook (Robert Squire) and Captain Hook (Connor McIntyre) kept the audience engaged with humour, character, and lively interaction. Mrs Hook’s impressive tongue‑twister lines earned plenty of laughs.
The show introduced several clever adaptations that set it apart from traditional pantomime expectations. A crocodile replaced the ghost in the classic “It’s behind you!” sequence – an inventive twist that delighted children.
Instead of the well-known 12 Days of Christmas, the cast performed the upbeat A Sailor Went to Sea, bringing a fresh burst of fun to the routine. The pre‑interval, finale and bows were full of colour, movement and energy, leaving the audience smiling.
One particularly touching moment came during “I See Stars”, where adjusted lyrics delivered an emotional and meaningful message that resonated with the audience.
With impressive special effects, strong vocal performances and beautiful choreography, The Further Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan delivered a magical evening suitable for all ages. The relaxed performance adjustments were thoughtful and effective, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable environment throughout.
Following the success of last year’s relaxed performances, we are pleased to confirm that this year’s pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, will also feature relaxed performances.
